Actually, I was on a wedding prep forum while prepping for our wedding.. A forum with mostly future brides from all around Québec... and I found that many many of them had decided to ask their guest for a money contribution to pay for dinner.. anywhere from 40$ to 80$ / person!
To me it was absolutely unthinkable to do that.. and this is why Greg and I waited until we could fund the entire wedding..
We were also against Open bar for personal reasons, but were very generous on wine during dinner and punch during cocktail!
Personnaly, when I go to a wedding I try to give a gift that represents the amount we would have paid for the dinner... plus a little extra depending on who's getting married (best friend gets more than coworker for example!)
So if I ever have to pay for the dinner in advance..(thankgod it never happened yet..) than I will cut on the gift..
I know some brides expect a gift anyways, but I personnaly think its wrong... Unless the dinner is worth 3 times the contribution.. ;) But really, people should just go with their budget... a wedding shouldn't break your bank.. and really I think its possible to make something very nice even with a smaller budget!
I'm not a "by the book" kinda planner when it comes to wedding etiquette... it's important for each couple to look at what their budget and make the most of it.
Still, this one crosses a line for me... but everyone's different.
